Art in Sharm El Sheikh

Hello everybody!

I just spent a week in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and during my trip I saw lots of great artwork.
In my hotel alone there were two different art shops, one selling the type of art you would probably associate with Egypt (featuring hieroglyphics, the pyramids, Cleopatra etc.) on papyrus, and the other was a more contemporary artist.

Every morning on the way to breakfast I'd pass an artist named Ibrahim's gallery. Every day he'd have new paintings. I really love his style of painting even though it's so different to my own. He mostly paints a striking silhouette in front of a beautiful colourful background. His skies are especially fantastic.

Not only is he talented but he's also extremely quick at what he does. It only took him a few hours to create a work of art. In the picture bellow he is painting red Christian Louboutin Shoes, the end result was similar to the ballet shoes bellow it. My mom was in love with the painting, she would have bought it but the two variations he painted of them sold out within hours. Also, our suitcase space was limited.

Around the corner was Mohammed who sold traditional Egyptian art on papyrus. I saw many artists like this in Egypt. This art, unique to Egypt, features Egyptian symbolism and scenes in Egypt.

Symbolism adds a new meaning to art. In Ancient Egypt colours and pictures used in art hold great importance.  They can signify life, death, love and much more. Symbolism was used as a form of communication and a mode of expression. Bellow, is a picture my family bought. It has each of our names in hieroglyphics and a picture of the god of love, Hathor and the Egyptian patron god Horus.

We also visited Michael's shop. (His was the least Egyptian name I heard all week.) There he had loads of beautiful pieces and some of them even glowed in the dark! I actually bought one for myself which you can see bellow. They were created using ink and glitter!

So, those were my art-orientated finds whilst in Sharm El Sheikh! If you would like to see some of the photos I took, you can visit my flickr.

Best wishes,
Czara.
