We are so excited to actually have our FIRST exhibition! I can't believe the time has actually come! It will be  great  to showcase the art work, for all the locals to see. They probably don't realise the amount of talent in Tralee! But guess what? You also get to see the artwork as we will post some of them in the blog and the rest in our website.

Cannot wait for it, hope it all goes well. If you are in the vicinity, come along, Saturday the 27th from 10 am to 12.30, St.John's Center Tralee!

Concept Art

Concept Art is a form of illustration where a visual representation of a design, idea and/or mood is conveyed to use in video games, movies, comic books and animation. Basically it is a form of art where you translate the written word into visual art, or creating something that does not exist ( like the ones by Park Jong Won). For example, in the Harry Potter movies a lot of concept art was used with all the different creatures that are in the book. J.K Rowling had described them, and concept artists used the description to design a visual of the creature, a place or really anything, based on the words of the book. It sounds complicated but it is extremely fun! We did concept art in art class. We took a book and made a mask of a character in the book. I did a Grindylow from the Harry Potter books. I really enjoyed it because I finally got to visualise a character from my favourite book- the way I imagined it. It is mostly used in science fiction and fantasy, where artists are used to create a new world, or non existing creatures. The most famous example would be 'Avatar'.

Here are some Concept artists.

Park Jong Won.

He is based in Seoul, South Korea, where he works in the video game industry. He has created concept art for games like 'Aion', 'Steel Dog' and '4Story Online'.

You can see the designs made in the last one. There is a large process of work to do when doing concept because everything has to be thought of.

Stephanie Olesh.

I particularly like Stephanie Olesh's work. She makes concept art for video games and animation- both creatures and characters.

I am particularly fond of concept art. I f I were to pursue a career in art I would do concept art. There are many places where you can study concept art - visit www.conceptartworld.com for more information on concept art  and on being a concept artist.

10 of the most famous paintings in the world

I researched ten of the most famous paintings in the world and it wasn't really a surprise, they are internationally recognisable. This does not mean that they are the best paintings in the world- just the most known. Trying to find the best painting in the world is something that can never be achieved because people will always disagree on what is the best, as we all have different ideas of what makes a painting good.

10. 'Birth of Venus' by Sandro Botticelli

It was created around 1485-87.  It depicts the birth of the goddess Venus. The myth that explains her birth says that she emerged from a shell! I think many of us have seen this painting but didn't really know the name of it, I didn't! It is now located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.

9. 'Water Lilies' by Claude Monet.

'Water Lilies' is a series of paintings by the French artists Claude Monet.(250 to be exact!) The painting is of his own garden in Giverny in 1893. He did this over a period of years. He said 'I have come back to the things that are impossible to do: water with weeds waving in the depths. Apart from painting and gardening I am nothing. My garden is my greatest masterpiece.'

8. 'Night Watch' by Rembrandt Van Rijn.

This was completed in 1642, during the Dutch Golden Age and on of Rembrandt's most famous paintings.

7. 'The Scream' by Edvard Munch.

Many Versions of this painting were done by the artist.
This particular one was painted in 1893 and is in the National Gallery of Norway.

6. 'Girl with the Pearl Earring' by Johannes Vermeer.

Ahh, the Girl with the Pearl Earring, tried on many occasions to draw or paint her, but with no success. It is branded as the 'Dutch Mona Lisa'. I don't know what it is about this that I love! I suppose paintings with mysteries are always the more attractive ones. There is so much uncertainty around this painting- when it was made, whether it was a commissioned piece, and if it was , for whom? I just love a mystery but it may never be figured out!

5. 'Guernica' by Pablo Picasso.

This is one Pablo Picasso's most famous paintings. Picasso painted this to highlight the effect war has on people, especially innocent civilians. He wanted to bring attention to the Basque town of Guernica by German Bombers. When you look at every thing that is put in and all the people in it, you do get a sense of what the bombing was like, and the effect it had.  The painting was completed in 1937.

4.'The Creation of Adam' by Michelangelo.

This a very recognisable painting. As we all know it was panted by the Italian artist Michelangelo for the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. The ceiling is abundant in murals but this is the most famous and the subject of many parodies. He worked on it between 1508 and 1512, at the commission of Pope Julius II.

3. 'The Last Supper' by Leonardo Da Vinci.

We focused on this painting in Art class in Second Year, and I thought it was really interesting! It is a mural painting in Milan, made in the 15th Century. It is safe to say that it is very old and it has been through a lot. It was made by Da Vinci in a monastery. It was on a wall that was infront of the Kitchen in the monastery. Because paints back then were made with flour and egg, the paint started to get warm and cook!
During the World War I, the monastery around it was bombed but it remained standing, and since then it was treated as a treasure and was properly reserved.

2. 'The Starry Night' by Vincent Van Gogh.

This is another painting that we studied, and we had to do an essay on it. To tell you the truth I actually enjoyed writing an essay on it.I loved the composition of the painting and the story of Van Gogh.  It hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Czara actually did a reproduction of this painting, but you wouldn't be able to tell that it was a reproduction. We must upload a picture of it soon.

AND DRUM ROLL PLEASE................

1. 'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo Da Vinci!

'Mona Lisa' is the most famous painting of all time- it's the most recognisable painting in the world.
It was made during the Renaissance, in Florence and was finished in 1519. It is named for Lisa del Giocondo. a member of a wealthy family in Florence. It is displayed in the Louvre in Paris where over 6 million people visit it every year.

No you know the ten most famous paintings in the world. And hopefully you know a bit more about them, their story and who made them.

This amazing portrait by Elizabeth Winnel is mesmerising. It is an exact description of what true and horrible pain feels like. I feel that if I go on I might ruin it- so just look.

The Importance of Art- What is it?

I've been wondering about this question for a long time. It's a question that has no definite answer, because the answer is whatever the individual artist wants it to be.I mean we do art, we paint, draw, sculpt, but do we ever think why? I typed it in Google- 'the importance of art', and so many suggestions came up. And I opened most of them, but none of them hit the spot.I'm gonna quote some of what people are saying in the internet.

"
  • Art encourages kids to express themselves
  • Kids develop many academic skills
  • Make art activities a part of every day."   - aplaceofourown.org

"Art is important because it encompasses all the developmental domains in child development"- aplaceofourown.org

"It is difficult to describe “Art” in literal terms, but broadly it is understood to be a form to express one’s feelings through any object or medium like paper, music, colours, technology, magic, photography etc" -tamaram.com

"From visual arts to literature and music to dramatic performance, the arts exert a powerful influence on societal development. Artists often challenge commonly held perspectives with innovative thinking. They raise awareness about social issues, break down barriers to cross-cultural understanding and global dialogue, and inspire creative ideas"- weforum.org.

There are many more examples but I did not want to bore you with quotes. I read all of these, and I felt that none of them described 'art'. They described the concept of art and why art is important- according to them. But do you not feel that these description seem clinical and scientific, rather than really saying what it is. I suppose to really find the importance of art is to ask yourself, Art is as important as you make it.

. "To some people art is very important, to others it is nothing. To most, it is nice, but fades besides the everyday problems of physical survival, housing, food, money, children, etc.
As far as I can see, the value boils down to what you think you are"

This is a quote from whatmeart.com, I think what they are saying is quite fitting. It's kind of what I'm saying. Anyway you are probably wondering what the point of the post it- Well here is a question,

What does art mean to you, and why do you think it is important?

We would love to hear your opinion.

Unbelievable Face and Body art

I came across some amazing optical illusion face and body art. They are done so well that you think that the face and body is actually in the form as portrayed. I suppose these are the sort of artists that are used in sci-fi movies. Maybe later on I will do a post on art used in movies.

Cool, huh? These were all made by an artists named Hikaru Cho. They are so good, I don't even know how they had the heart to wash it off! Hikaru is so talented, a far cry from what I did one day in school for dress up day. Let's just say it didn't go great.....However some of you viewers, yes YOU, may be good at hand and body art, so send us some pics if you are!
